He is controversial in every respect. He was hated, he was loved… but make NO mistakes, Pablo Picasso was a master craftsman. He knew his way around a canvas as good as any who lived. Whether or not you like his choice of composition or colors or overall painting styles doesn’t matter, he’ll live on in infamy throughout human history. So, in this month’s “Master of the Month” at wet canvas we’re studying his painting, “The Old Guitarist”. Below is my reproduction.
This was very very difficult for me. Before I began the painting I decided to paint it at half the size of the original (which was about 32X48). I started on 16X25 with a giant amount of headaches… I couldn’t get the blue’s right. I tried every blue I had, and none of them were right. One of my fellow painters on WetCanvas gave me a tip on what she used for her reproduction: It was Cerulean Blue. I didn’t own any! I went to Bates and got a tube and never looked back. The painting just flowed after that. It’s amazing what the perfect color can do, and how much frustration the wrong colors can bring!!! stupid blue!
So, let me know how you like my version of the orignal.
Damn, Stiner! That is very good! I’ve always been cursed with the inability of recreating animate objects. Give me an inanimate object, and I can do it but people and animals….nuthin’!! Keep following your passion!
